Our Greatest Need

“O our God, will you not execute judgment on them? For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” 2 Chronicles 20:12

It was A.W. Tozer who famously said that what we believe about God is the most important thing about us. Do we ever need an immersion in spiritual realities about God. Ours is a culture that is being inundated by a return to a pre-Judeo-Christian worldview. It was/is one of paganism with all of its lies about God. It was that kind of cultural environment that surrounded Judah and Jerusalem. When Jehoshaphat, the king, heard that an army was approaching with an overwhelming number of warriors ready to kill and pillage, the first instinct, after an adrenaline rush of fear, was to seek the Lord. One thing we need, if we are to overcome the battalions of arrayed attackers on God, is having a clear vision of who God is. Trust, obedience, and worship are motivated by believing the right things about God and putting them into practice. Our best response to what C.S. Lewis called “Christianity and water,” the view that says “there is a good God in heaven, so we need not be concerned with difficult doctrines such as sin, hell, and redemption” (Ten Lies About God, Erwin Lutzer), is to acknowledge our powerlessness and humbly rely on God for the strength and wisdom we need.
