“The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying, ‘Let us burst their bonds apart and cast their cords from us.’” Psalm 2:2-3

As believers in Jesus Christ, we know that one day Christ will establish His kingdom on earth. However, in the mean time, we have to live in the kingdoms of men. The psalms are concerned with the establishment of God’s kingdom. We might even say that the theological theme of the psalms is “the God who rules.” We see man locked in mortal combat with the powers of evil. The psalmists are on the battlefield. They are warriors fighting for the Warrior King. They reach for and grasp the exquisite perfections of God. We are also on this battlefield. Sometimes the smoke and fury of it all can create the “fog” of war. But we can see through this because of the reality-reminder of verses like Psalm 2:2-3. The leaders and people of this world devise ways to overthrow God’s rule and God’s ruler. God’s Anointed, Jesus Christ, the Davidic King, infuriates the kings of this world. They hate Jesus Christ. Herod, Pilate, the Romans, and even the Jews conspired together as rebels against God’s Anointed. Our world today is no better. The nations desire their autonomous rule. It was Charles H. Spurgeon, who said, “We have, in the first three verses, a description of the hatred of human nature against the Christ of God.” To hate God is to hate Christ. To hate Christ is to hate God. Exactly how is this being played out in our time? More on that later. Dear fellow followers of our Savior, do not fear the snarling opposition to the Lord and His Anointed. Look up to that unfurled flag of the King of kings. But it is not just a flag. It is the cross of Christ declaring victory over all aligned in foolish rebellion against Israel’s Messiah and our Savior. Are you with Him? H
A time to stand fast: “O God above all the universe, may my loyalty to You never fail.”
