“There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood…” Proverbs 6:16-17

Let us first of all understand what abortion is. It is the extraction or expulsion of the immature human fetus from the mother’s womb prior to natural birth (Harold O.J. Brown). The obsession with the so-called right to abortion is a reminder of the degree of our cultural corruption. It is not, as some insist, only a “medical” procedure. It is an index moral issue. One’s view on abortion tells us much about one’s grasp of freedom and responsibility and, ultimately, their thought about God. Let the following realities about abortion and God be understood. (1) God has made if very clear that the developing fetus is already human life (Psa. 139:13-16, the formation of the life of a person in the womb). (2) Fetal life is defenseless and will be vindicated by God. God is opposed to those who destroy conceived human life (Psa. 10:17-18). (3) Arguments that are used to justify the destruction of fetal life are morally and ethically flawed. For example, it is often said that “a woman alone has the right to choose what is done to and in her body.” What about the rights of the innocent yet unborn whom the woman has chosen (in most cases) to conceive? Who gives the unborn child a choice? (4) There are measurable and meaningful things that we can do to challenge and correct the culture of death in which we live. Among other things, we are to identify, resist, and denounce the evils that exist in our fallen world (Eph. 5:11, expose the unfruitful deeds of darkness). It has become fashionable in some evangelical churches to remain silent on the evil of abortion. One prominent pastor of a large church in the Atlanta area who, when asked what he told churchgoers about the abortion issue, is reported to have lamely declared to his congregation that he has strong personal feelings about the issue (of abortion), but didn’t discuss what they are. This is the nod to winsomeness that is supposed to keep a Christian from offending those who are advocates of abortion. Indeed, we are to demonstrate compassion to the mother of the unwanted child in her womb, compassion that is infused with truth-driven love. H
A time to pray: “O Lord of all human life, turn consciences that approve of abortion into advocates for the lives of those yet unborn.”
