When God is Forgotten

Now therefore hear this, you lover of pleasures, who sit securely, who say in your heart, “I am, and there is no one besides me; I shall not sit as a widow or know the loss of children”. Isaiah 47:8

Alexander Solzhenitsyn was described in 1983, upon receiving the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion, as “a pioneer in the renaissance of religion in atheist nations.” He had emerged as a lone and courageous voice in speaking truth to godless communism. He said, “…if I were asked today to formulate as concisely as possible the main cause of the ruinous Revolution that swallowed up some sixty million of our people, I could not put it more accurately than to repeat: ‘Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this has happened.’ “ Solzhenitsyn was speaking of the Russian Revolution. The humanistic arrogance of Babylonian culture in Isaiah’s day was a horrible sight (Isa. 46-47). Babylon thought she was unique, “I am , and there is no one besides me.” Western civilization is in a hurried pace to emulate ancient Babylon. We preen ourselves on a worldview that has substituted a God-tradition with a God-free transformation of culture. Especially sad is the great tragedy of the hour that Christians are woefully ignorant of God. A low view of God plagues us. I follow the track of thought of notable men of God (J.I. Packer, A.W. Tozer, both now with the Lord). There has been a loss of the concept of the majesty of God from the average evangelical mind.

What must we do? We must know God! He exists and has revealed Himself. He can be known even though we will never be able to know “too much” about God. Can you honestly say that your life is an unrestrained quest to know God in a personal and intimate way? If so, why not ask God to take you places with Him to which you have not gone. H

A time to pray: “I come to you, O Lord over all the nations. Raise up voices that will call America to fall on its knees and humble itself before you.”
