Role models. We hear that a lot in our dysfunctional society. There seems to be a push to find role models for how to live the right way. The gold standard for exemplary living at the present time does not live on this planet. He ascended back to heaven in A.D. 33. However, He left the perfect example of what it means to live the perfect life. In contrast to Friedrich Nietzsche’s (1844-1900) Ubermensch, a superman who lives by his own standards, Jesus Christ, the second Adam, revealed the superlative human existence, embodied in humble service. Human language guided by the Holy Spirit rises to sublime heights in what has been called the “hymn of Christ” (Phil. 2:5-11). The Jesus way is not the “will to power” but rather that He willingly submitted to the relinquishment of His rights to life in heaven. This involved a change in His glory. It was one of a move from glory to obscurity (Jn. 1:10). The Creator of the universe gave us a model, not one of stepping on others in the struggle for supremacy, but out of a deep love for God and others, He served. He did not divest Himself of deity but wrote His story of servanthood in the blood of His sacrificial life and death. H
