“A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain, but knowledge is easy for a man of understanding. Leave the presence of a fool, for there you do not meet words of knowledge.” Proverbs 14:6-7

Wisdom tells us that know-it-alls don’t know it all. Beware of scoffers and fools. They are everywhere. The scoffer is someone who laughs at sacred things and fights against divinely constituted authority. Scoffers can be merely flippant, late night comedians posing as fountains of wisdom. They may be columnists who try to make a silk purse of truth-talk out of a sow’s ear of untruth. The follower of Jesus Christ works at listening to those who believe in the trustworthiness and sufficiency of Scripture. They also will take time to read the right stuff. Ask an older, wiser Christian what authors and books seek to plumb the depths of the revealed thoughts of God. To the young who are reading this, strain the ideas brought to you in the classroom, and by your peers, through the grid of the only book God has written, the Bible. If you are looking for advice and need help in decision making, stay away from fools whose root problem is spiritual, not mental. The fool is one who is unteachable. Who are the teachers in your life? No better example is found than Jesus who, as God’s servant, was a scholar whose ear was awakened morning by morning to listen as a disciple (Isaiah 50:4). Jesus learned from His parents, His synagogue experience, and no doubt had Genesis to Malachi memorized. Through all these means, He was taught by His Father. H
A time for prayer: “I come to you, Lord God, to open my ears to those who can aid in training me in the ways of wisdom.”
