“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” Romans 13

This Tuesday we will again be able to participate in a fundamental privilege of representative government. In a Constitutional Republic we are in some sense governed by those we choose at the ballot box. Having lived through and voted in national and local elections for over sixty years, there have been some lessons learned. Of first importance is being informed. Know something about those for whom you are going to vote. The newspapers use to be of some help, but partisanship of the media committed to liberal ideology has poisoned the printer’s ink. Seek out and listen to those who hold to a biblical worldview, who know the political landscape, and who have a reputation for wisdom. Know key issues. There are certain political and moral issues that serve as an index on how a candidate will govern. What is his view on the unborn? Are green lights to increased killing of babies in the womb a part of the candidate’s record? Is the candidate supportive of the LGBTQ+ agenda? Are bigger government and more taxation seen as a solution to our national ills? Don’t over estimate the potential of political victories for reversing the moral decline of a nation. Paul wrote to the Roman church to guide them in their civic duties in what was a pagan culture. May God help us to stem the tide of godless secularism sweeping our land. Believers in Jesus Christ “who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil” (Heb. 5:14), can be some of the best gifts to one’s fellow citizens in contributing to the flourishing of society. Such issues as the Supreme Court, originalist Supreme Court Justices, Abortion on demand, protection for asserting religious beliefs, prison reform, parental choice in education, immigration, Israel, the so-called Green New Deal are only some of the issues that require biblical wisdom. H
