The Supremacy of God

“For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.” Romans 11:36

Human beings love to praise the creation but not the Creator. The truth is that God is to be praised because He is supreme over all things. Why is it that we cannot be God’s counselor? Why is it that God does not depend on human assistance and is not indebted to anyone? The resounding answer is that God is the source of all things. He is supreme over His creation. He spoke it into existence, sustains it, and will bring it to glorify Him. Ah, but we are told that God took millions of years through some kind of chance through time to give us the universe we have. So does the theory of evolution whimper as it asks God to leave the room when origins are discussed. But what about sin? If all things are from Him and through Him and in Him, does that include sin? No. We have God’s own explanation of His relationship to sin. God is holy. There is no sin in God, no lust, greed, or untruthfulness in God. Sin can be from God and through God in that He has willed that sin be without Himself sinning. It is not in any sense an aspect of His nature. God ordains that sin be. What is ultimate about human history is the glory of God. As one has said, “worship is the concluding word.” Is the worship of God the last word on how we are living our lives? Are we willing to leave the mysteries of God’s mercies in the hands of a loving, infinitely wise, just, and sovereign God? A new year is almost upon us. What adjustments are we prepared to make as we stand on the shoreline of eternity?

“O God of all mercies, I praise you that the universe is yours, that it came into existence and is sustained by your word. I praise you that the gospel shines brighter that a million suns, that the way of salvation is from you, through you, and for your glory.”
