“But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.'” Luke 10:40

Company’s coming, a very special guest. There’s a lot to be done, a meal to prepare with little time to spare. Martha wanted everything to be just right. Her sister, Mary, was more interested in the Bible study than cooking and setting the table. Martha wanted Jesus, the special guest, to light a fire under her sister to help her. Jesus gave a loving rebuke to Martha. A simple dish was all that was necessary. After all, soul food was more important than a big meal. Time is a valuable gift. It must be used wisely. Team work is important in hosting guests, but more important is thinking and living by biblical priorities. Sacrifices for Christ’s sake are to be a part of our decision making and commitments. Our service for others must not become infected with self-centeredness. Don’t overcommit and miss the more important things. Jesus had to remind Martha of the importance of spending time with Him. Learn the biblical skill of balancing life’s demands. God must stay at the center of all of our duties. Don’t assume a responsibility and then complain about it (Phil. 2:14). Loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength is a call to serve others in our local church, but don’t forget the main thing, close fellowship with the Lord is always the main dish.
