“Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. . . . Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are you who take refuge in him.” Psalm 2:10, 12

The appeal from God is for the nations to worship the Son of God. As one commentator has aptly said, believing that the speaker is the Holy Spirit, His call is “very gentle, a very loving, a very tender voice.” A call is issued for obedience and submission. The kings are surrounded. A decision is to be made, “Throw down your weapons and come out with your hands up.” Stop rebelling. Foolish nations had better surrender before God’s wrath is kindled. In the words of Derek Kidner, “The mutinous nations are offered their only hope, which is submission.” Five cage rattling verbs say it all, “be wise,” “be warned,” “serve the Lord with fear,” “rejoice with trembling,” “kiss the Son.” This is no congressional hearing where two equals are engaged in verbal dueling. There are only two alternatives in the call to surrender: to rebel and bring upon oneself the wrath of God’s Anointed, or to serve Him and enjoy happiness and His blessing. Dear reader, are you taking refuge in God the Son? Have you kissed Him in humble homage? This is the only place of safety from the wrath of God. There is no refuge from God, only refuge in God. The call is to repent which is turning from your unbelief to trust in Jesus Christ. This will turn your world upside down.
