“The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.” Isaiah 50:4

We should not die having not read about Isaiah’s mysterious figure called God’s Servant. He was said to be God’s chosen one, a human but more than a human, one who brings justice, will live a life of obedience to God, successful in His mission, yet hidden, unknown, and unrecognized. He will gather Israel back to the land. He will be despised and rejected, but He will triumph. How does one put all this together and answer the question, “who is this person?” Add to all this that this Servant of God will be trained through an intimate relationship with God the Father. This promise, this hope, this One who will deliver Israel is an instrument in God’s hand to challenge a despondent nation, Israel, to whom sin had brought spiritual and material catastrophe. The Servant will have been trained to hear the voice of God the Father. Yes, this is the Lord Jesus Christ who received daily instruction from the Lord in how to comfort the weary. The weary are those who are fainting under life’s demands. Listen to Jesus as He instructed His disciples, taught an ignorant religious scholar, Nicodemus, who gave hope to a woman thirsting for meaning in life, a healer, a teacher who was soaked in the Scriptures of the Old Testament. Are we good listeners, hearing God’s Word day to day? The Servant of God is our model, our Savior.

“Heavenly Father, may I not be so hurried that I neglect my time with you. Teach me to know how to think your thoughts and be a hope-giver to those who are weary and burdened.”
