An Advocate

“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” 1 John 2:1

Sin is a lost word in our present world. We hear instead about “misspoke,” “mistake,” “mental illness.” There is an aversion to the idea that there is something morally wrong with human beings. Indoctrination in the theory of evolution has changed the way people assess themselves. We overestimate ourselves. However, erasing the word sin from our self-knowledge does not change the fact that defiance of God’s moral will is at the root of our problems. Fellowship with God is enjoyed as we have a passion to live for His glory and be repulsed by sin. The word for sin most often used in the New Testament implies a missing of the mark. The fact is that we not only don’t aim straight morally, we don’t even know where the target is. As Christians, the ideal is not to sin, but if and when we do we have One who speaks to our Father in heaven on our behalf. Because of the sinlessness of Jesus, He is not a part of the problem. The only way we can gain forgiveness is because Jesus Christ has satisfied the righteous demands of the Father by making the perfect sacrifice for sin. It is a matter of justice pleading with love. God would be unjust if He did not forgive my sin. If we sin, and we will as Christians, fellowship with the Father is interrupted. Do you have a sin that needs to be confessed? The worst thing you can do is to ignore it and try to cover it up. The best thing you can do is to confess your sin. Deal with it. Unconfessed sin will only complicate your life and eventually subject you to divine discipline.
