“You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night, you have tested me, and you will find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.” Psalm 17:3

Commercials abound selling various kinds of remedies for sleep problems. Another side to sleeplessness is that it can be redeemed. The psalms help us on this. David appears to be arguing with God. David thinks that God should hear his prayer and answer it because his plea is right and at that point his life was above reproach. Sleep can be for spiritual inventory and seeking God. Try some healthy introspection and reflection. It can be beneficial (Psa. 77:2-6). A wide-awake time in the middle of the night can be the occasion for thanksgiving and joy (Psa. 63:6-7), as well as a constructive use of memory. Actually, the brain can kick in and provide a better understanding of the Word of God and how it fits into the circumstances of life (Psa. 119:48; 1:2 “day and night”). Personal suffering can cut into needed sleep. David said his bed was floating in tears (Psa. 6:6). Adversity and adversaries can come in and gather around our bed. Make this a time to yearn for God and His help (Psa. 42:1-5). Recommended: The Thought of God by Maurice Roberts. Seek such an aid to get your thoughts occupied with God. Melatonin helps some with better sleep. But don’t write off the value of meditation, thinking hard about biblical truth.
