The God Who is There

“Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!”
Psalm 34:8

Knowing about God is not the same as knowing God. Certainly we must know about those qualities of God which constitute who He is. It has been truthfully said that, “To get to know another person, you have to commit yourself to his company and interests, and be ready to identify yourself with his (or her) concerns. Without this, your relationship with him can only be superficial and flavourless” (J.I. Packer). God exists and has revealed Himself. He wants us to know what He is like. This is what the psalmist is saying (Psa. 34:8-10). The particular situation was one of overcoming fear by rejoicing in the care of God. The “taste test” involves seeking God in prayer and repentance. It is important to separate the fear experience from the fear object. What do you do when the elevator gets stuck while you are on it? We need a heart that will take specific and practical steps of trust in God. Fear can be overcome because God is able to deliver us from our fears. David, the mighty warrior, was shut up to God alone and cried out to Him. Such is personal involvement with God in mind and feeling. Place yourself in the moment with God as your friend.
