“33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,…escaped the edge of the sword…some were tortured…some were killed with the sword.” Hebrews 11:33-34, 37

We do not have to look long or far for the false gods our age. One of those is the god of my health and wealth. It’s preached on cable TV, written about in books, and promoted by deceived professing Christians in many churches. The writer of Hebrews tells us of those whose faith enabled them to triumph over the mouths of lions and escaped the edge of the sword. But without hesitation speaks of others in the hall of faith who didn’t walk “a sure road to the headlines, success, earthly victories, and deliverance from harm and danger” (V. Havner, Day by Day). Don’t fall for those who equate prosperity with living by triumphant faith. The deceiving power of the false god of “health and wealth” has slain its thousands by disillusionment. To follow the Jesus who had no place to lay his head (Matt 8:20) and the apostle who had “learned to be content whatever the circumstances” (Phil. 4:11) are among those who are commended through their faith” (Heb. 11:39).
