“But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal ….and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant…” Hebrews 12:22-24

The writer of Hebrews invites us to come to the celebration of the new covenant which Jesus Christ has made possible, in contrast to the Old Covenant (the Mosaic Covenant) represented by Mt. Sinai where Israel received the Law with its thunder and lightning and unapproachability. It spoke of “standing back!” But now we can come to Mt. Zion representing all that belongs to the body of Christ, the Church. It is the home of God’s people, the gathering of hundreds of millions of angels, the assembly of all those whose names are written in the Book of Life, where we meet the perfect Judge, where we meet all the Old Testament saints, and there is Christ whose blood declares redemption. We are to be awed by such privileges. Can you count yourself as part of such a celebration? If there were any of the first readers of Hebrews who were tempted to return to Mt. Sinai and the Old Covenant, what a loss that would be. A sense of our heavenly destination should give us the high ground needed in times of adversity.
