Limping

“And Elijah came near to all the people and said, ‘How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.’ And the people did not answer him a word.” 1 Kings 18:21

The scene is electrifying. Read 1 Kings 18. But for now we must focus on God’s power over the gods of human creation. Ahab, the king of Israel, was a moral coward. He could not decide between the nature god of the Canaanites or the Creator God of the universe, Israel’s covenant God, the Lord God. He “limped” between two opinions. There are professing Christians in our day whom we might call cafeteria evangelicals. They pick and choose what they want to believe from the Bible. For example, we are told that there are professing evangelical Christians who believe spiritual energy can be located in physical things and believe in psychics, which is to say they seek to follow a modern day “Baal,” a fictitious god.
It is not possible to hold on to the worship of Baal and the Lord God at the same time. The wise will pause and do some heart searching and house cleaning. “Have I allowed incomplete obedience to God to infect my mind?”

“Lord God, in heaven above, I know you are to be loved without hesitation. Make it clear to me where I have allowed false beliefs to rule me.”
