“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.” Psalm 51:5

Arising from one man’s damaging sin arises an acknowledgement of the problem of the human condition. David committed adultery and then conspired to cover it up by having an innocent man killed. Thank God we have a psalm of lament and confession of sin committed. We need this. How frequently we see attempts to sweep sin under the rug, calling it something else (e.g. a mistake) or ignoring it. David knew something about himself and it was not good. What about our sins? We must see sin for what it is, a revolt against God. Sin is sin because only by God’s law is it defined as sin (Psa. 51:3-4). Repentance for sin involves grief, grief over the fact that sin springs from an evil nature with which we were born. There are no excuses. When we sin, it all started in the womb of our mother. But thankfully, the potential for a conscience was also being developed in the womb. It only needs to be fed the right “data” to bring it to life and reality. Is God’s law settled in your mind?
Which all brings us to this. Do I grieve over my sin and take it to God for His forgiveness?
