Serving Again

“Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.” Psalm 51:13

When sin pulls us down, as it did with David, there is hope for renewed usefulness. But first there must be repentance which is a “definite turn from every thought, word, deed and habit which is known to be wrong. . . It is an inward change of mind and attitude towards sin which leads to a change of behavior” (John Stott, Basic Christianity). We can praise God for the renewed desire to teach sinners about God’s grace. David wanted to lead others to repentance. Forgiveness opens up fresh opportunities to serve God. Peter is an example of this very thing (Lk. 22:32 “. . . And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”). Don’t underestimate God’s grace and mercy. David had been guilty of having a man killed. Such a total lack of concern for another human being was reversed. This is to be the occasion for public praise as it was with a penitent David.
