Politics in Proverbs

“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” Proverbs 14:34

The recent attempted assassination of a former president running for the office of President of the United States of America places the importance of government before every Christian. There is no place for political pacifism among followers of Jesus Christ. The national strength of any government is gauged by the moral caliber of its people. “While it is true,…that government cannot save people or fundamentally change human hearts, whenever we say this, we must simultaneously affirm that government policy and laws do have an immense influence on a nation for good or for evil” (Politics According to the Bible, Wayne Grudem). The moral implications of any number of issues are at the core a vital part of Christian thinking and living. What is your theology, and application to daily living, of abortion, same-sex “marriage,” poverty, illegal drugs, care for the environment, capital punishment, pornography, education (who has the primary responsibility to decide what children are taught in public schools?), moral standards? The hardiness of a nation is not found in words and symbols but in actions rooted in wise thought processes. A challenge faced by any nation is the coming and going of generations. The potential for moral disorder (the judgment of God) in thinking and character raises legitimate concerns. Political pacifists are those who withdraw from involvement in the politics and responsibilities of what it means to promote righteousness in our communities and nation.
