“Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” John 13:5

Have you ever washed someone else’s feet? Some Christian denominations observe foot washing as part of their communion service. Emotionally, it is a humbling experience. Jesus was giving His disciples a lesson they weren’t to forget. He assumed the task of a slave/servant and fulfilled the custom of washing the guest’s feet. Noticeably, none of the disciples initiated this act of servanthood. What was to be perpetuated by the followers of Christ was self-sacrificing, humility in forgiving one another and showing servant-love for one another. Am I willing to get down on my hands and knees, take someone’s dirty, smelly feet, wash them and wipe them dry? Who do I need to be serving in a Christ-like way, my spouse, a friend, a fellow disciple of Jesus?

“Lord, thank you for washing me all-over in forgiving me and giving me the bath of an eternal relationship with you. Keep me mindful of the need to wash my own feet in confession of sin as fellowship is restored with you.”
