Confession

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

“What, me a sinner?” “You’ve got to be kidding.” That’s what some were being persuaded to believe about themselves. The Spirit of God through the apostle John sets the record straight. The principle of sin dwells within every believer in Jesus Christ. The hard truth is that to admit our sin is to face up to the reality of pretending. Confessing is part of walking in the light. The biblical and God-honoring attitude regarding sin is to affirm our sinfulness by admitting our sins. The presence of God in the believer’s life through the Word of God and the work of the Holy Spirit throws the light of truth upon our thoughts, words, and deeds as to what they are. As we sin we must be in the habit of confessing our sins. The Christian life is a sin-confessing life. This is not to be confused with penance. Penance is a punishment borne to show sorrow for sin to make up for a wrong done. We can’t deal with sin in our life by self-denial and self-inflicted suffering. Praise God. Because God is true to His Word and has made His Son to be sin for us, we can have forgiveness of sin and cleansing for all unrighteousness. Dear Christian, are you keeping short accounts with God?
