“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.'” Genesis 1:26

Is work in trouble in the USA? One observer has said, “Only one-tenth of American workers say they are satisfied with their jobs.” An increasing number of men and women confess to the conclusion of Herman Melville: “They talk of the dignity of work, bosh. The dignity is the leisure.” Digging deeper, work is associated with the problem of meaninglessness. This easily gives birth to sloth, the lack of a good work ethic as many would put it. Lack of contentment and the problem of overwork make work a “four-letter word.” To gain our mental sanity about work, God has given work in order to reflect our likeness to Him: “And God said to them (Adam and Eve), ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it…’”Gen. 1:28). The psalmist said of God, “When I look at your heavens, and the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,…” (Psa. 8:3). God completed His work…rested from all His work that he created and made (Gen. 2:1-3). God is a worker. Work has dignity and value in itself. Our work is important, not because of sin, but because our work reflects our likeness to God. Take that thought with you on your work days.
