“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” Matthew 5:6

A friend recently described the Georgia Bulldog’s defense against Texas vividly; “these boys are playing like they haven’t eaten in weeks.” Jesus said that those who are His disciples will hunger and thirst after righteousness. We are talking about a ravenous appetite for God. What about our deepest desires? It was Augustine, the great theologian, who said, “Thou hast made us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Thee.” Am I longing for a right relationship with God? In terms of spiritual hunger, am I starving to know God better? If so, do I want to be like Jesus Christ enough to feed my soul on God’s Word day after day? Am I in a church where nutritious meals of good Bible teaching are available? When I hunger for righteousness, I will be aware of those things that will spoil my appetite. When I hunger for the things that please God, I will be satisfied. A sense of need, sorrow for sin, and taking a lowly place before God are appetite stimulators. If football players can play a game starving for victory, how much more should Christ’s people be driven to know God.
