“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4.12

In view of the fact that the Scriptures are living (God speaking), active (effective), discriminating (penetrates to our inner core), and able to judge (convicting), imagine what happens when clear, strong, bold preaching from the Bible becomes hard to find. This is sad. What a loss. The Word of God has a supernatural capacity for discerning our thoughts and intentions. It affects a sifting process. It reveals who and what we really are. “If we really want to understand ourselves, we must fill our souls with God’s Word” (Kent Hughes). The Bible is under the direction of the Holy Spirit: What or whom we are trusting, fearing, listening to, depending on? What or whom we are serving in life (Matt. 6:24). It exposes what or who our functional gods are; what or who controls us and and calls the shots in our lives. The Scriptures do not need to be supplemented with the so-called insights of secular psychology. Hopefully, you have a church that explains and applies God’s Word Sunday after Sunday. Equally important is that you dig into the Bible in your personal time.

“The Bible is the statute-book of God’s Kingdom, wherein is comprised the whole body of the heavenly law, the perfect rules of a holy life, and the sure promises of a glorious one.” Ezekiel Hopkins (1634-1690)
