A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah.
“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” Psalm 63:1

“As a lover who wants to be near the one he loves.” These words help to reveal the heart of David. He was feeling rejected (“The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absalom.” 2 Sam. 15:13-30). David had to deal with fear. There were dangers. He was disappointed. His son had betrayed him. David was grieving. He had lost the affections of his people. This psalm (63) highlights the ways in which the child of God becomes satisfied in God. Can we trust God and enjoy Him and His closeness when things are not going well? Drive this stake in the ground of your heart; I am satisfied with God when my desire is set upon Him. This will exclude all other gods that knock on the door of your mind. Appetite for God. That’s desire on the move. As one commentator has put it: “He yearns for fellowship with the Lord like one who thirsts for water after days in the desert.” Are you in a desert now? Gather your emotions, thoughts, will, and physical appetites around God. Only God Himself can satisfy the craving of the soul. We were made for Him. Why look elsewhere?

“Feelings, experiences, meditation, reading, church attendance, with all these we may stop short of God, finding some satisfaction, but letting the good rob of us the best- Himself.”
