Seeking God

“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” Psalm 63:1

Are you a seeker of God? Before you answer, think it through. Non-Christians are not seekers of God (Rom. 3:11). The human heart is a seeking heart, but it looks in all the wrong places. Adam and Eve were hard-wired to be God seekers, but such longing was hijacker by sin. The human race is caught up in fulfilling its desires by going down the dead-end streets of idolatry. However, at the same time those who are born again through faith in Jesus Christ are set in a trajectory to seek God. King David of Israel was one of those. In one of the darkest times in his life he expressed his insatiable appetite for God. Rejection, fear, disappointment, and grief were hanging over David’s head. Derek Kidner, commentator on Psalms, tells us that the desire for God rises above the harshest of times: “Those who long for God do not allow the presence and experience of God to be bounded by walls or good times.” If you count yourself a seeker of God, are you finding your enjoyment of God in your desert experiences? When the circumstances of life are treating you harshly, draw near to God. That’s the best comfort and our only hope.
