Prayers for Presidents

“For kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” 1 Timothy 2:2

Is it possible to be a political “activist” and still be faithful to the believer’s call to obey the Great Commission (Matt. 28:19-20)? The apostle Paul did not hesitate to instruct the church through Timothy to pray for politicians. In the first century this included Roman emperors (not a God-fearing lot) and lesser officials. The church in its worship services and in private prayers is to pray for the necessary freedom to assemble and carry on with its responsibilities. The repressed church in Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, and other such countries have to deal with harsh repression. Bad governments make a “peaceful” and “godly” nation more difficult. Good rulers will incline themselves toward justice and love. Pray that the President will surround himself with biblically wise cabinet members and advisors. Include State and local government as well. Pray that the President, no matter what his political party, will live out and call for exemplary moral standards. We have examples of this in George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. There was a time when both these Presidents were held up to elementary school students as worthy models for moral leadership. We can give honor to whom honor is due by our prayers.
