A Truth about Tragedies

“And he answered them, ‘Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way?'” Luke 13:2

A plane crashes and all are killed. A tornado sweeps through a town in the middle of the night. An active shooter leaves multiple deaths of innocent lives. Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem. He has just spoken to His disciples about the importance of reconciliation with God before the day of judgment (Lk. 12:56-59). Jesus is asked the meaning of two tragedies. Did they occur because the victims were greater sinners? Was this evidence of God’s judgment? Jesus says, “unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” How would that go over on the social media of our day. Post this for all to read. Personal disasters are not necessarily due to personal sin (Jn. 9:2). Pain and suffering are a part of living in a fallen world. Personal suffering and tragedy should drive us to God. Don’t be self-righteous. No one is exempt from death. Be ready! God is giving us ample opportunity to repent and turn from our unbelief to the generous gift of forgiveness and eternal life. When a tragedy takes place, we should ask, “What lesson is there in this for me?” Seek the Lord while He may be found. Are there those to whom I need to speak this truth?
