Lest We Forget

“Then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever.” Joshua 4:7

God has used memorials to teach His people. Twelve stones were placed in the midst of the Jordan River as a testimony for future generations to remember God’s faithfulness. He had stopped the flow of the Jordan River for Israel to cross over into the Promised Land. Our nation’s government has designated Memorial Day to honor American service men and women who gave their lives for their country. Though not a “religious holiday” it is nonetheless critical to perpetuating from generation to generation what it costs to enjoy the freedoms we have. We are to thank God for what He has given this great nation of ours. This is part of the preparation for the future to look to God that we might live in such a way as to uphold God’s moral law. Without this we cannot survive as a nation. For Christians, we can set our minds in thanksgiving for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. The good news is that Christ alone is the hope for living with God in the new heavens and the new earth.

“Father, help us both in the conveyance of our faith and the transferring of our national heritage to take responsibility as fathers and parents both to live with vitality and teach with intentionality. Grant, O Lord, a revival in your church and in our nation.” A prayer taken from A Call to Christian Patriotism, Dr. Howard A. Eyrich
