“Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.” 1 Corinthians 2:12

God has breathed out the words of Scripture. The Bible, all sixty-six books, is without error and totally trustworthy (2 Tim. 3:16-17). But we need the ministry of the Holy Spirit to help us to understand the truth of the Bible. This is called illumination. As believers in Jesus Christ, when we study our Bibles or when the preacher proclaims its truth, it is important to ask God “to open our minds to understand it, to open our hearts to receive it, and to obey whatever God commands us” (Tim Challies, Pilgrim Prayers). Over the lifetime of a Christian the Spirit of God will turn on the lights to enable us to see clearly what God has revealed. How important it is, therefore, to be rightly related to the Holy Spirit to know the things of God. Is this your deepest desire?
