Praying for the Unsaved

“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10

How many times have we prayed, “Thy kingdom come?” Our prayers should express the desire for people everywhere to bow in submission to God’s rule. Actually, what we are praying is “Come Lord Jesus, come quickly!” (Rev. 22:20). Our prayers should express the desire for the unsaved to come to faith in Christ. We are to be praying for new kingdom citizens. How much a part of our praying is for the lost to repent (turn from their unbelief), and place their trust in Jesus Christ. Praying evangelistically means thinking in terms of ever widening circles (Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the uttermost parts of the earth Acts 1:8). It may help to have a globe or a map of the earth near you as you pray. Think of the millions who have never heard the good news about Jesus Christ. Am I praying for the unsaved in my family circle, neighborhood, and the classmates of my children? A small notebook can help identify and spread out over the month different names, countries (e.g. Argentina, India, Nigeria). Open Doors Ministry provides a “World Watch List” annually. The kingdom comes by way of conversions to Jesus Christ. A legitimate prayer burden is that “unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 18:3).

“The hopeless cheer; guide those who doubt;
Restore the lost; cast no one out;
For all that are far off I pray,
Since I was once far off as they.”
Christopher Newman Hall, “We Pray for Those Who Do Not Pray”
