The Bread of Life

“Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.'” John 6:35

There were thousands of hungry people who followed Jesus because of the signs He was performing (Jn. 6:2). The miracle of the five barley loaves and two fish which became sufficient to feed at least fifteen thousand people was a powerful illustration of who Christ is. But that was not the end of the story. The crowds were impressed with the provision not the provider. Jesus gave a theological lesson about bread, i.e. food. Just as Jesus told Satan, the most important thing was not physical food/bread (Matt. 4:4), but God’s provision of spiritual life found in Christ. As bread is a necessary food, so we cannot truly live without Christ. Jews and Gentiles need food. Everyone who believes in Christ will be satisfied (Jn. 6:40). Are you living a life that has meaning and is satisfying? This can never be found in any religion, any political system, any philosophy, but only in the “Bread of God” who came down out of heaven, the Lord Jesus Christ.
