“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'” John 8:12

A blind man in a dark room searching for a black cat that is not there. Such is the condition of lost human beings living in a spiritually dark world looking for the meaning to life. Jesus was speaking to spiritually blind religious leaders at the time of the Feast of Tabernacles. The custom was the lighting of giant lamps in the women’s court in the temple. It was a vivid reminder to the Jewish people of how God guided them in their wilderness wanderings. The pillar of cloud which turned to fire at night (Num. 9:15-23) was the guidance of grace for Israel. The shock came when Jesus declared He was the genuine light by which comes guidance out of the darkness of sin and judgment into the brilliant light of salvation and guidance through life. In no uncertain terms Jesus is a guide into life and through life. Are you finding this to be true in discerning truth from error? To live and walk in darkness leads to the infinite chasm of separation from God’s forgiveness and eternal judgment.

“I praise you, O Lord, for being the Light of the World. Guide me to those who need the light for living that only you can give.”
