The Good Shepherd

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” John 10:11

The evening shadows began to disappear. Darkness came in all around as the sheep came into their fold for the night. Dangers lurked everywhere. In Bible times the country side in Palestine was beset with lions, wolves, jackals, panthers, leopards, bears, and hyenas. To top it off, thieves and robbers were sheep rustlers. Enter the Good Shepherd. He was no false shepherd such as were the leaders of the nation. The healed and converted blind man is still in the story. As the Good Shepherd dies for His sheep, He also knows His sheep. None of His can wander and be lost (“I know my own and my own know me” 10:14). He also gathers His sheep. Wonderful spiritual realities are folded into the relationship between Jesus Christ and those who belong to Him. Take delight in the voluntary death of the Savior for His sheep. He bears the penalty for His sheep. Only the Good Shepherd’s life can satisfy the infinite justice and holiness of God required for the penalty of sin.

“O Dear Shepherd of the sheep, how wonderful is your protection and rescue of your sheep. I want to cross the bridge of death rejoicing in you my Good Shepherd.”
