The Soils of the Heart

“And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it.” Mark 4:4

Jesus told stories, lots of them. We call them parables. They were heavenly stories with an earthly meaning. The parable under consideration is what is commonly called the parable of the sower. But it actually is about four different kinds of soil. The kind of soil where the seed lands is a description various heart responses to the message of the kingdom, the pre-cross call to bow one’s knee to the King of Israel. The sower is Christ and those who represent Him. The seed is the Word of God proclaimed. The first soil is the hard packed dirt beside the road. The condition of the soil determines the potential for growth. The rocky ground in Palestine would be a limestone base lying right under the soil. On a Sunday afternoon the gospel was clearly presented to over 100,000 people and perhaps even millions by way of television and the internet. According to the story Jesus told, Satan has his agents who assist in the work of deception (Mk. 3:22; Matt. 7:13-15). How many in the vast numbers who heard the Word of Truth at Charlie Kirk’s Memorial Service failed to understand the message with its eternal consequences? We don’t know. But we do know that those blinded by their various religions would fail to grasp the message and go on down the road of life whistling past the grave yard of eternal judgment. What is the condition of your own heart? Has the seed of Christ’s call to repent and believe on Him fallen on the hard surface of your heart. This will happen if we think that Jesus is something He is not.
