Soils of the Heart

“Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil….Other seed fell among thorns.” Mark 4:5, 7

What is the condition of the soil of your heart. For some the seed of the Word falls where there is no depth of soil. Life is present, but it is life without much depth. Their response is sincere and real, but the effects don’t last. You don’t want this to happen. You might want to think of this the next time you frequent “Sprouts.” Has temptation come and revealed the lack of depth with the Lord in your life? What happens when tests come to you? Have you stumbled and fallen? Then there is the soil that produces fruit. Vibrant spiritual fruit-bearing can be derailed by the cares of this world (“thorny soil”). The weeds of preoccupation with money and success, divided allegiance, the pursuit of self-satisfaction can sadly diminish long-term effectiveness that the King desires from his subjects. All this to say that the King’s subjects must practice healthy self-awareness, repentance, and the pursuit of maturity and fruit-bearing.

“O Lord of the Harvest, you are my King. I repent of low expectations in my service for you. May I distain mediocrity that thwarts effectiveness for you the Sower of the seed.”
