Our Best Effort

“For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge,” 2 Peter 1:5

It is God’s design that transformed lives flow from a true knowledge of Jesus Christ. At our conversion we have received power to live the Christian life. We have also received a new nature. Was there not a yearning for God, the desire to please Him, that had not been there before? The fact is that the God-pleasing life is hard work. This is the personal responsibility aspect of God working in us. There is to be no half-hearted effort in the matter of growing in Christ. The Christian life is not a boot-camp but neither is it living on easy street. Think of it this way. The life of pursuing likeness to Christ is like power steering on a car. The engine provides the power for the steering, but the driver must actually turn the wheel. So the Lord provides the power to run our lives, but we must “turn the wheel.” Are you spending quality time studying the Bible? Do you talk to God with adoration of Him, confession of sin, thanksgiving, and intercession for others? Do you look for opportunities to tell others about the gospel?

Reflect on the following:(1) Is the sufficiency of Christ for godly living turning out to be the story of your life?
(2) Is the sufficiency of Christ impacting the control of your appetites, emotions, thinking, conscience, your kindness to others?
