“For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge.” 2 Peter 1:5

Knowledge. Who needs more knowledge? Every Christian does. The Christian life is one of developing a greater knowledge of the revealed will of God. If we are to mature in the faith, we need an insatiable appetite for all that the Bible teaches. Peter is not presenting a wooden, seven-step plan for growth. The healthy Christian life is one of progressing in the qualities of Christlike living. The false teachers who were plaguing Peter’s first readers claimed to have “new knowledge.” They were making-up what they thought was “good teaching,” but was really “empty, boastful” words (2 Pet. 2:3, 18). Be careful, dear Christian friend. All that glitters is not gold. God has given the sixty-six books of the Bible to be read, understood, and lived. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the desires of the new nature demand a serious effort in developing wisdom and discernment. We could say we are to have our spiritual heads screwed on right. One wonders, how many Christian men have a better knowledge of football than they do of the book of Romans? We commend ourselves as servants of God by our knowledge of the person and work of Jesus Christ, how God wants us to comfort one another in times of pain and suffering. Like newborn babes longing for the pure milk of God’s Word.

Reflections: How many of the books of the Bible can you think your way through?
Can you accurately explain to an unbeliever the meaning of Christ’s death on the cross?
