The Discriminating Power of the Sword

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

Never underestimate the penetrating power of the Word of God. One of the great tragedies of our day is how Christians resort to unbiblical therapies in order to transform themselves. The great question in psychology is motivation. Everything from power and status, identity, sex, pleasure, and meaning can easily become idols. The Bible crushes the vain pursuits of man’s way and accurately cuts through the inner life of the Christian. Only the Word of God can adequately probe and expose the motives involved that lead to hardness of heart. Hard hearts require the penetrating, perceptive power of the razor sharp, doubled-edged sword of the Word of Truth. Some say, “If I don’t take care of myself no one else will.” Self-reliance is supposed to be a goal for life.** Our capability to rationalize strategies to accomplish sinful desire is almost unlimited. We become self-deceived.

Reflections:
Am I submitting myself to the scrutiny of the Scriptures?
Is my motive in life to be loved, to receive attention, to be successful, to have power and status? Or is it to bring glory to God?
