“for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.” Romans 13:4

One of the most important civic duties is to vote. Living in a Constitutional Republic offers the opportunity to vote for a candidate who may best serve in restraining evil in the nation. A Christian should vote for the candidate who is committed to the basic purposes of human government (Rom. 13:1-5). Civil government has a twofold God-given purpose, namely, the good of society by being a terror to evildoers and by rewarding those who do well. Government exists to restrain evil. It does this by promoting justice, protecting life and property, and preserving peace and order. A Christian should vote for the candidate who refuses to endorse the shedding of innocent blood in abortion. A Christian should vote for the candidate who is committed to the strengthening of the family. There are further standards that could be given.
But we, as Christians, are to be aware that God judges a nation by turning it over to those who violate the creation order and biblical principles. In other words, judgment comes in the form of a banquet of consequences when God’s righteous moral is scorned and rejected.

Reflect:
Can I identify any proposed policies that would be harmful to our nation?
Have I or will I vote in the upcoming election? If not, why?
