and say to them, “Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden, and he will spread his royal canopy over them.” Jeremiah 43:10

The morning the headlines are good or bad depending on one’s political perspective. How is the Christian to interpret unsettling news? Twice in the book of Jeremiah Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, is referred to as God’s servant (25:9). Was that good news to Israel? Probably not. For the sake of clarity the following note in the Reformation Study Bible is helpful. “He is God’s ‘Servant’ in the sense of being appointed as an agent of His judgment. Even though Nebuchadnezzar had his own sinful motivations for his actions, the Lord can overrule his purposes to accomplish His goals. In the same way, Cyrus is called God’s ‘anointed’ (Isa. 45:1). . . The Lord is able to pronounce gloom and blessing ahead of time in very specific terms, naming individuals, because He is the sovereign God who controls the outcome of all events.” As believers in Jesus Christ, we can be assured that no matter what the intentions of politicians and society at large, we know that God is in control and He can be trusted. The circumstances of life must always be filtered through the infinitely wise revelation of God in the Bible.
