“And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, ‘Take; this is my body.'” Mark 14:22

The Lord’s Supper, as it is commonly called, does not need any defense. Its significance and solemnity has been celebrated for over two thousand years. Jesus instituted it the night he observed the Passover meal with his disciples, anticipating His sacrificial death the next day. Jesus explained the meaning of the bread and the cup by using a symbolic action like the prophets of the Old Testament. It was made clear that the bread symbolized the incarnation of Christ and His substitution on the cross. By eating the bread Christians proclaim the life of Christ (death, burial, and resurrection). It was with His body that He carried out our redemption. The bread is a representation of His body, not the equivalence of His body. To say “this is” means the vivid reminder of His atoning sacrifice for sin. The eating of the bread also calls attention to the believer’s fellowship with Christ and with fellow believers. (1 Cor.10:16-17). As believers, we demonstrate the reality of our vital connection with the person of Christ as well as meeting with one another in the bread.

Am I in the habit of meeting with fellow believers in church in adoration of Christ’s perfect sacrifice for sin?
