A Death Wish

“And the people of Israel said to them, ‘Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.'” Exodus 16:3

Discouragement can take us to a dark cellar mentally. Responsibilities when not handled in a biblical way can spiral us down through discouragement and into a death wish. Israel had forgotten the slavery of Egypt. Complaining took over accompanied by a short memory, a kind of spiritual amnesia. They forgot who God is and the misery of the old life. This mixture became even more toxic by failing to see the future through the lens of faith. Complainers are short of sight. All they could see was their lack of food rather than God’s goal for them. As a result they became intoxicated with self-pity. They hit bottom with “I wish I were dead.” Have you ever been there? “Good ole days” reminiscing can distort reality. Failure to apply biblical truth to our circumstances is a sure way to run off the road into the ditch of depression. Rather than complain about what we don’t have, praise God for what we do have.
