An “Oh” Kind of Thinking and Living

“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!” Romans 11:33

It can be a good thing to encounter something that stuns and humbles us. When it comes to God we need to be overwhelmed by how much we can’t know about God. This is not to say that what we do know about God should not knock us to our mental knees. Romans 1-11, especially chapters 9-11, takes us to the biblical heights of God’s grandeur and incomprehensibility. How can God use disobedience to Him to lead us to the magnification of Himself. This brings us to the “Oh” of Romans 11:33. Like the cascade of a mighty torrent that rushes to a thunderous waterfall, three wonderful exclamations about God’s wise plan of redemption leave us in stunned silence. The “Oh” brings us to the shoreline of the vastness of thought about God. The richness of the infinite kindness of God as displayed in Christ is awe inspiring. God’s dealings with the sinful creatures that we are, both Jew and Gentile, can never be exhausted. It is not unlike gold and silver mines which have been abandoned. The tragedy of prideful humans is the depth of the grief over those who think they have God figured out and leave Him to create their own gods. All this is to say that God is to be praised for the richness of His mercy. God’s mercy is life transforming. It would do us well to so worship God in this post-Christmas emotional come-down.

“Oh God, flood my heart and mind with the infinite treasure of who you are. Bring me into a fresh quest to know you and how to live that out.”
