At the Crossroads

“Does not wisdom call?…On heights beside the way…beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud.” Proverbs 8:1-3

In a very real sense we all have our moment of standing at a crossroad, a fork in the road, if you will. But unlike Yogi Berra who said, “when you come to a fork in the road take it.” From the ridiculous to the sublime we are told to be all ears when Lady Wisdom calls out. “Go this way!” In Proverbs wisdom is living life God’s way (“instruction,” “understanding,” “insight,” “good sense,” “discretion,” “knowledge”). Don’t be like the fool who is seduced by the adulteress standing by her corner (Prov. 7:8), using her wiles to lead the young man to an open grave. God’s creation order, male and female, husband and wife, moral purity, loyal-love to one’s spouse. The world mocks this. It makes movies that portray sexual immorality and the creation order as corruptible, pleasurable freedom. Ah, the excitement of that digital screen which promises endless delights. Lady wisdom says, don’t go there. “The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil’ (Prov. 8:13). Do you belong to Jesus Christ through faith in Him alone? Then follow Him at that fork in the road. “Blessed are those who keep my ways” (Prov. 8:32).
