“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after these things, and your Heavenly Father knows that you need them.” Matthew 6:31

Worry can easily be disguised and even excused. How would you know the difference between the unbelief of anxiety and God-given contentment? Our desire for physical nourishment should never be our master. It is a characteristic of the secular world to worry. The advertisements in the media are designed to keep us dissatisfied with what we have. How much complaining do I do? What are those things and pursuits that eat up my spare time? The lives of kingdom citizens should be qualitatively different from those who have no trust in God’s fatherly care. Do my fundamental goals go beyond material things? God is aware of our needs. If we believe that, what should that look like? Our Father is in heaven, the place of sovereign rule. He is with us and concerned about us. He knows everything, every article of clothing hanging in our closets, every cut of meat in our freezers. God is not going to forget us. Wear and taste those truths. That’s the recipe for contentment.

Reflection:
Would I consider myself a thankful person? Why not?
What things tend to hook me into the worry trap?
Do I talk to God about my anxieties? What understanding do I have about the biblical truth of lament?
