Don’t Worry

“And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?” Matthew 6:27

Would you like some better reasons not to worry? Let’s face it. Worry is irrational. We can spend a lot of wasted mental energy by not leaving the details of life to God. Worrying never got anyone anywhere. Anxiety over how long we are going to live won’t help us add minutes to our lives. Our culture is obsessed with lengthening life. Interviews with people living over the age of 100 can get inordinate attention. God is in control of our life span. Why worry when He has the number of our years on earth in His hands. The truth is worrying will shorten our lives. It affects the circulation, the heart, the glands and the whole nervous system. Attention to living a healthy life style is one thing, but obsessing over diet, physical exercise, or whatever is the latest “snake oil” on the market will not guarantee longevity. Worrying is an indication of our selfishness. The gift of life, which is from God, is to be used for His purposes, for spiritual and heavenly reasons, not selfish and earthly ones (Col. 3:1-4!).

Reflection:
Do you find yourself dwelling on the following?
“Will I ever have enough money for a house?” “Do I leave bill-paying sessions with a vague anxiety?” “What will make me feel rich, secure, prosperous?”
