Drinking the Cup

“In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.'” 1 Corinthians 11:25

Participation in the Communion service is a public demonstration of a spiritual reality. It is saying that we have fellowship with the work of Christ and share this common life with other believers. We too often indulge in shallow thinking or daydream our way through what is to be the remembrance of Christ’s atoning death on the cross. As we drink the wine, or grape juice, we are symbolizing the New Covenant work of Christ’s sacrificial death. Jesus Christ gave up His life in a violent death for the remission of sins. The blood of the covenant is the price of our redemption. It is the highest price ever paid for anything in this universe. The New Covenant is described in Jeremiah 31:31-34; Ezekiel 36:25-28. It was made with Israel which provides for a change of heart, fellowship with God, knowledge of the Lord, and forgiveness of sins. All this will be fulfilled for Israel when the Lord returns (Romans 11:26-27). The church enters into this provision by faith in Christ, as Israel will (Ephesians 2:12-13). We are to prepare ourselves for the Lord’s Supper by self-examination, engage in biblical meditation as we take of the bread and cup, and anticipate the coming again of Jesus Christ.
