Encroaching Darkness

“So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.” John 12:35

Each passing day the shadows are lengthening. We have fewer daylight hours. For aging eyes this presents challenges, especially if trying to get home before dark. Jesus spoke some ominous words in the few days He had before leaving this earth. He was telling His disciples that belief in the light, Jesus Christ, will provide light for their walk, and answer questions about Him. That’s the good news. But then the dark side. Failure to respond to the light means loss of the light. Seize the light while you have it. Now the warning. Progression into greater darkness comes to those who reject the light. Unbelief leads to greater unbelief, from darkness to more intense darkness. Hear the words of Alexander Maclaren (1826-1910), “Rejected light is the parent of the densest darkness, and the man who, having the light, does not trust it, piles around himself thick clouds of obscurity and gloom, far more doleful and impenetrable than the twilight that glimmers round the men who have never known the daylight of revelation.” The Pharisees rejected the light because it conflicted with their way of thinking and living (Jn. 9:39). They rejected the light of Jesus Christ because of its supernatural nature as it threatens the evil of the human heart (Jn. 3:19). Indeed, there are none so blind as those who will not see. Be frightened by the darkness of unbelief. It can only lead to an eternity without Christ and any hope. H

A time to pray: “Father of lights, I pray for those I know who are rejecting the light of Jesus Christ. Only the Holy Spirit can open their sin-blinded eyes.”
